Many people today are longing for something deeper — a greater sense of meaning, connection, peace, and inner truth beyond the noise, chaos and distractions of everyday life. Spiritual Direction, also called Spiritual Companioning, is a gentle and sacred practice of slowing down, listening deeply, and becoming more aware of the presence and movement of Spirit within one’s life. While rooted in ancient contemplative traditions, Spiritual Direction is not limited to religion alone. Religious, non-religious, spiritual, and mystical seekers alike can benefit from having a compassionate Companion to help explore the deeper questions of the soul and the unfolding journey of the heart.

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is an ancient contemplative and monastic practice centered on a sacred relationship between a seeker (the Directee) and a Spiritual Companion or Director. The Directee is often seeking deeper meaning, a greater connection with the Divine, or a clearer understanding of how Spirit may be moving and unfolding within their life. It is a gentle space to explore what is emerging within the soul — questions, longings, transitions, awakenings, and deeper purpose.

The role of our Spiritual Director, who is a specially trained Minister, certified in Spiritual Direction and Chaplancy and commissioned by the Franciscian Cicle, is not to provide answers or tell someone what to believe, but rather to offer the compassionate practice of Holy Listening — listening alongside the Directee for deeper meaning, sacred presence, wisdom, and spiritual movement. The Companion serves as a witness to how Spirit is unfolding within the seeker’s life, inviting greater awareness, healing, growth, and connection to the Sacred.

Spiritual Direction IS NOT:

  • Therapy or counseling

  • It is Not about “fixing things”

  • coaching or mentoring

  • A practice of dogmatic instructions, although an exploration of mystical and contemplative practices may be part of this practice, as feels appropriate, to assist in growth, connection and healing.

The process is not about giving answers. Instead, it encourages seeker to ask questions and reflect on their own experiences. The Director listens, asks gentle questions, and offers reflection and contemplative guidance that can help the seeker gain clarity.

Key Elements of Spiritual Direction

  1. Listening: The Director listens deeply to the Directee’s thoughts and feelings. This creates a safe space for exploration.

  2. Reflection: The Director encourages the Directee to reflect on their experiences. This can lead to new insights and understanding.

  3. Guidance: The Director offers gentle guidance through deep, Holy Listening, helping the Directee to see their path more clearly. The Director may also share contemplative tools, encouring Directees to find spiritual tools and practices with which they best align and connect with Spirit.

  4. Support: The relationship is built on trust and support. The Director holds contemplative and confidential space for the Directee to explore their innermost thoughts in a safe and supportive environment.

  5. Spiritual Growth: The ultimate goal is to foster spiritual growth and a deeper connection to the Divine, Oneself and the "outpicturing of the Divine into the Universe" through this work- whether that is simply sharing love in the world or coming into your life's purpose...

The Benefits of Spiritual Direction

Engaging in Spiritual Direction can lead to numerous benefits. Here are some of the most significant advantages:

  • Support: Having a Companion can provide you with spiritual and compassionate support during challenging times.

  • Growth: The process encourages personal and spiritual growth and healing. You may find yourself evolving and healing in ways you never expected.

  • Community: Many spiritual Directors are part of larger communities that may provide additional support and resources.

  2. Location of Meeting: If you can't work with a Spiritual Directors in your local area, online sessions can be just s intimate and sacred- and you can meet from anywhere!

  3. Meet with Potential Directors: Many directors offer an initial meeting. Use this time to let them know why you want to start Spiritual Direction- what is bringing you at this time?

  4. Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask about their approach, experience, and beliefs to see if you feel connected or open to those approaches.

What to Expect in a Session

A typical session with a spiritual director can vary, but here are some common elements:

  • Opening: The session usually begins with a brief prayer. meditation or "coming within", offer a contemplative environment and allowing you to relax and share what is on your mind.

  • Listening: The director will listen attentively, with the aid of Spirit, as you share your thoughts and feelings.

  • Questions: Your Director will likely ask gentle questions that encourage deeper reflection and exploration.

  • Reflection: The Director may offer insights or reflections based on what you share. This can help you see things from a new perspective.

  • Homework and Continued Reflection: You may also be given contemplative homework to help you grow, heal, gain insight and unfold upon your sacred path, between sessions, as you build a direct and closer relationship with the Divine in ways that are meaningful to you.

  • Closing: Sessions often end with a reflection of key points and a moment of silence or prayer.

Spiritual Direction vs. Mental Health Therapy

While spiritual direction and therapy may seem similar, they serve different purposes. Here are some key differences:

  • Focus: Therapy often focuses on mental health and emotional issues. Spiritual direction focuses on spiritual growth and exploration.

  • Approach: Therapists are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Spiritual directors guide individuals in their spiritual journeys without diagnosing or having a "fix-it" appraoch.

  • Goals: The goal of therapy is often to heal and manage mental health issues. The goal of spiritual direction is to foster unfolding, ongoing spiritual growth and understanding.

  • Journaling: Keep a journal to reflect on your thoughts and feelings. This can enhance your understanding and growth.

  • Meditation: Practice meditation to connect with your inner self. This can deepen your spiritual journey.

  • Nature: Spend time in nature to feel connected to the universe. Nature can be a powerful source of inspiration.
